A breath of fresh hope for those most in need.

For more than 20 years, our lung transplant program has given new hope to people of all ages who struggle with life’s most essential function. To date, UNC has performed more than 350 single- or double-lung transplants.

UNC performs lung transplants for the entire spectrum of respiratory diseases, and is known around the world for having one of the oldest, most respected, and most successful cystic fibrosis transplant programs.

Besides our outstanding record of performing successful lung transplants, UNC is distinguished by a special compassion for the people we serve, with respect for the dignity of the patient, and the loved ones who care for and struggle alongside them. Our care team is patient-centered, passionate, and experienced in helping everyone involved through the highs and lows of the transplant process. From the time we are introduced to potential lung transplant patients, through the transplant itself, to their life at home after discharge, our patients and their families become part of the UNC family, and as such, our emphasis is on doing whatever possible to ease the long journey for all involved.

Backed by the resources of UNC Health Care, our team of dedicated surgeons, comprehensive support staff, and leading-edge researchers have built a world-class transplant center with access to the latest techniques and technologies.
