Patient and Caregiver Lung Transplant Support Group

The Patient and Caregiver Lung Transplant Support Group offers a great opportunity to learn about various aspects of transplant in depth, to hear fellow group members’ experiences, and to connect with people who are facing similar issues. There are speakers at some meetings; others are open discussion sessions.

The Support Group meets twice a month at UNC Hospitals. Some members participate via conference call. Please contact Laurie McDonald, LCSW, CCTSW, for more information or if you would like to attend.

Other Support Groups

Most transplant patients need to do some fundraising to cover out-of-pocket expenses not paid by insurance. These expenses may include:

  • insurance premiums, co-payments and deductibles
  • medications, both prescription and over-the-counter
  • transportation to and from the hospital
  • lodging in the Chapel Hill area
  • expenses of a caregiver who has taken time off from work

Your social worker and your transplant financial coordinator will talk with you in detail about fundraising during your initial evaluation, and will give you some resource information.
